Dr Pallavi Roy (SOAS-ACE) and Dr Jackie Harvey (GI-ACE)  discuss the structures of political and economic power in Nigeria and the underlying systems of corruption that culminated in the protests of the #EndSARS movement in Declarations, the human rights podcast from the Centre of Governance and Human Rights at the University of Cambridge. Despite the challenges due to the systemic nature of corruption in Nigeria, Dr Roy argues there are real opportunities to reduce corruption and improve governance. She proposes the slow formalisation of informal economies, instead of attempts at big bang reforms, and encourages listeners to leverage the current political momentum to push the government towards tractable goals like job creation and skills training.
